The colonists were huge underdogs when the revolution commenced.  The Britsh held the largest empire on Earth, commanded the greatest navy in human history, and wielded a large professional army.  The Continental Army was outmanned, outtrained, and outgunned.

The "Americans" could not fully defeat the British militarily, but instead fought for a political victory.  The conflict began in the northern colonies in 1775, and shifted to the southern colonies by 1778.  With the unwavering leadership of George Washington and the support of Spain and especially France, they were successful in that endeavor.

Fought from 1775-1783, the Revolutionary War created the United States of America.
