European History
Interwar Years
1919-1939
WWI destroyed an entire generation of the population, but on top of that it destroyed a culture in many ways. After centuries of growth and development, the Great Powers of Europe self-immolated. The ideas about the value of the individual were proved bankrupt, Europe was in economic depression, and the confidence average citizens had in their politcal and technological leaders was shattered.
From this low point rose a series of dictatorships across the continent. Attitudes across Europe ranged from a commitment to isolation to a thirst for revenge among individuals and nations.
A lasting peace proved impossible as governments took on extreme idealogical forms like fascism and communism. Between the world wars, some countries prepared for the next great conflict while others tried their best to avoid it. In the end, World War II cme along and made the WWI look rather small in comparison.
